About Extra-Medium

Extra-Medium is a platform focused on the creative process – the thinking, testing, failure, revision, and discovery that sit behind finished work.

Manifesto

We live in an age that prizes the final outcome and neglects the process.

We rush to finish the song, complete the painting, post the image, to have something to show or sell.

But it is in the process that character is built. Technique is sharpened. The person is made.

A musician may begin with a feeling they want to paint with sound. A painter may chase an image they do not yet fully understand. What keeps them returning is not the final release, exhibition, or applause, but the encounter itself: artist and medium figuring one another out in real-time.

In that encounter boundaries are tested. Missteps happen. Discoveries appear. New paths reveal themselves.

Most of this labour remains hidden. Experiments stay on hard drives. Failed paintings are turned to the wall. Studies are left in storage. From the outside, the journey remains hidden. Timelines obscure. We revel in the mystery.

But this hidden labour is where the real work happens.

It is where artists learn their own rhythms: when to rest, when to wait, when to move, when the fruit is ripe enough to be picked. Only the artist knows when they are in or out of season.

Extra-Medium exists to make that process visible.

We are here for the drafts, the dead ends, the revisions, the breakthroughs, the thinking, the doubt, and the becoming.

Because process is not secondary to the work.

Process is the work.

This is Extra-Medium – dedicated to the process behind works in progress.

Who is Addy?

ADDY

Mascot, guide, neighborhood contrarian

Addy – short for Devil’s Advocate – is XM’s resident challenger of fixed positions.

He doesn’t take sides for the sake of opposition; he exists to question certainty, resist binarism, and remind readers that most things live in shades of grey.

Part guide, part antagonist, Addy moves through the world of XM like an RPG companion, offering annotations, counterpoints, and interuptions that push both staff and readers to look again.

Created by Ramone, Addy emerged from lived encounters with conflicting internal voices and the difficult work of learning how to sit with contradiction without collapsing into absolutes.

As XM grows, he will continue to appear throughout the platform as a navigational figure – provoking thought, complicating easy answers, and helping guide readers through the publication.

XM is his brainchild, named by retired co-founder Aziz Tarkhan, and built from a long-standing desire to foreground process over polish. Working across painting, writing, music, and design, he shapes the platform’s editorial direction and voice from the intersection of art, culture, and lived inquiry.
